Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

Should duct work be cleaned after a fire?

After experiencing a fire where the structure was still intact, several steps are taken, including inspecting structural and sub-structural surfaces and contents for char, soot, and/or odor damage. Something to never overlooked is the condition of the HVAC unit air handler and duct lines. Inside the primary duct work, referred to as the 'Plenum,' you can see it has a heavy amount of soot deposit which has covered the interior of an insulated fiber board. Due to the porous construction of the fiber board replacement is generally recommended. If it were steel duct work, cleaning, applying an anti microbial and Teflon sealer is commonly successful.
